Mara Castilho is perhaps best known for her performance art works, which also take the form of films and photographic documentation. In her work the River between us she wore a Christian wedding dress and floated as if a dead body between the two banks of the Mostar river in Croacia. One side was Christian the other Muslim and it referenced her marriage to a Muslim at the time of their civil war. For his and his family’s protection they were force to part. The work existed as a performance and is now a looped video, where we see her endlessly floating between the two contested banks of land. Her new exhibition “The emptiness of my soul” is the first in which she only presents photography, in a series of triptychs, diptychs and altered editioned works. All of the works are images of her in performance in a desolate ruined house that are printed onto canvas. She has then either painted onto the surface or embroidered them, and each is unique. These images speak of violence and disruption. The embroidered images present an additional layer of violence. They are continuously punctured by the sewing needle, which at the same time as wounding, heals by the addition of the thread. Like a bloody battlefield wound that has been stitched in place to keep the victim alive, Castilho seems to be attempting to mend the fragile mental state of the woman in the image. This of course is Castilho herself in performance, but she is a stand in for all women affected by war and violence. The image of the woman in all the works shows her cornered and hooded, we cannot see her face. In the painted works Castilho uses a mustard yellow that hints at the mustard gas used in WWI to kill thousands. The colour reminds the viewer of a sickly sort of mold that grows on wet or damp walls, and the fungus looks as if it could creep slowly over the whole of the image, consuming it, the woman and possible the viewer. It is hard not to turn away from these demanding rectified photographs. The works are open enough as imagery to be taken as a warning of the dangers of overlooking mental health issues, or possible even the dangers of an upcoming environmental catastrophe. We ignore the distress of individuals or the globe at our own peril, and she suggest that we will find ourselves also empty, empty of hope, empty of possibilities, empty of a future should we continue as humans along our present path. Castilho’s new works are a warning but will she too turn out to be like Cassandra, the ancient Greek daughter of the King of Troy whose truthful warnings were heard but never believed.
